Safety First: Our Monthly Community Initiative
If you've seen our bright vans parked up near a muddy 30mph sign lately, you might have wondered what we're up to. Once a month, the team at WOW Gutters downs tools on commercial jobs to take part in our Community Shine Project. We spend the day cleaning local road signs that have become obscured by years of traffic grime and algae.
Why No One Asks Us (And Why We Do It Anyway)
Local councils do their best, but with budget cuts and massive road networks, sign cleaning often falls to the bottom of the priority list. In the UK, a dirty sign isn't just an eyesore—it's a safety hazard. If a driver can't clearly see a speed limit or a sharp bend warning, the risk of an accident increases exponentially.
The Challenges Our Signs Face
UK road signs are under constant assault from:
- Exhaust Film: Microscopic oily particles that 'bake' onto the reflective surface.
- Agricultural Runoff: Mud and tractor spray in rural areas that can completely 'blank out' a sign.
- Algae and Lichen: Which thrive in the damp UK climate, especially on north-facing signs.
- Vandalism: Graffiti and stickers that hide vital information.
Our 'Hot Wash' Technology in Action
Cleaning these signs isn't just about a bucket and sponge. We use the same high-pressure, heated water systems we use for residential guttering and fascia cleaning. This 'Hot Wash' removes stubborn grime without damaging the reflective coating that makes signs visible at night.
"It's a small task for us," says our project lead. "We have the equipment, we have the team, and we're already out on the roads. It only takes a few minutes per sign, but it makes a massive difference to the local feel-good factor and, more importantly, road safety."
